5. Keep your anti-virus up to date. Installing an antivirus program and keeping it up to date can help defend your computer against viruses. Antivirus programs scan for viruses trying to get into your email, operating system, or files.

7. Do not click on any pop-up ads. Because pop-up windows are often a product of spyware, clicking on the window may install spyware software on your computer.

8. Be wary of free downloadable software – There are many sites that offer customized toolbars or other features that appeal to users. Don’t download programs from sites you don’t trust.

9. Be careful of what you download off the internet. Pirated files have a higher chance of containing a virus.

10. Get your computer checked annually.
