The U.S. Defense Department unveiled its "pandemic influenza playbook," which was developed by the Fort Monroe-based Joint Task Force Civil Support team of state, local, and federal officials.
Software technologies are available that can be applied to the investigation and management of pandemic alerts and responses.
Until the group created the guide, the federal government had no plan in place for how the military would respond to a pandemic or support civilian agencies across the United States. In the guide, the military is required to set up command stations to communicate with local and state officials, and military personnel are to be instructed on how to protect themselves during a pandemic while still fulfilling their duties. Information in the book stems from the expertise of medical professionals, logisticians, mortuaries, and public affairs officials.
