tippingpointAs security threats to organizations' infrastructures grow more sophisticated, organizations are now turning to unified threat management (UTM) to prevent attacks. UTM combines several security applications such as anti-virus, anti-spam, and firewalls into one solution. CIOs and IT managers view UTM as a good way to protect the perimeter, but not the sole solution to security, especially in regards to remote offices. "UTMs give customers choices, allowing them to use the box's multiple combinations of security features yet maintain a single management system for all of the included products," says IDC's Charles Kolodgy. "The central management of all features is very important for small and medium enterprises that don't have large IT staffs." Use of UTM has increased 50 percent this year, Kolodgy says. Organizations are advised to develop and implement best practices and policies to protect their assets.
