110_f_433153_nmwbpqsoxcrspy4xbu912pzjb7dfahAs the number of mobile workers increase, the number of threats to mobile devices are also expected to increase, according to IDC. The company predicts that by 2009, the mobile workforce will increase by 30 percent to 878 million. So far since 2005, almost 400 data losses have been reported, putting more than 97 million individual records at risk, says the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. Mobile devices can store sensitive information, which makes them vulnerable to attack. Mobile workers are increasingly dealing with threats stemming from lost or stolen laptops, unsecured wireless connections, and data breaches. Some say companies are not doing enough to protect their corporate information. Kahn Consulting reports that more than 80 percent of companies have employees that use wireless handheld devices, but just 35 percent monitor the use of those devices. "We're seeing exponential growth of electronic business records increasingly contained on smaller wireless devices, including confidential data, trade secrets, and personally identifiable financial or medical information," says Randolph Kahn at Kahn Consulting. "But there is almost ubiquitous mismanagement of electronic information, creating more and more ways in which information can be glommed onto either intentionally or accidentally, creating risk and potential liability." Of the more than 600 U.S. companies surveyed by the Business Process management Forum, 40 percent admit they do not have measures in place to protect, track, and archive data on mobile devices.
