Secure that Laptop! Print E-mail
Written by Jason Vance
Laptops are great for many elected officials and administrators who frequently travel. The newest devices are powerful and light, which make them wonderful travel companions. However, it also means they are easier to lose.

Here are some easy tips to keep your laptop and its data secure.

  1. If flying, store it under the seat in front of you and not in the overhead compartments. It is easy to forget about it when it is not right in front of you.
  2. Use a strong password with both numbers and letters (called alphanumeric). This makes passwords much more difficult to break. You should also make sure that you know how to change the password to your system.
  3. Back up before you leave. Ensure that all data and important information is stored on another device such as a server, or external hard drive.
  4. Use tracking software or hardware. If your laptop happens to go missing or get stolen, there are software or hardware packages that will send out a GPS signal if your laptop is on. Usually, these companies also give you a sticker you can place on your laptop to deter would-be thieves.
